The China Nexus

Tuesday, November 29, 2022
12:00pm – 1:00pm

This seminar is full. Thanks to all those who RSVPed.

Benedict Rogers, founder of Hong Kong Watch, a long-time human right advocate and analyst covering China, North Korea, Hong Kong, and Burma will be joining us for a special seminar to discuss his latest book. Lunch will be provided.

The China Nexus tells the story of Benedict Rogers’ fight for freedom for the peoples of China and neighbouring countries Myanmar (Burma) and North Korea and sets out how a global movement for human rights in China is emerging and what the free world should do next. The book describes the human rights crisis across China, including the persecution of Christians, the genocide of the Uyghurs, atrocities in Tibet, the crackdown in Hong Kong as well as the threats posed by Beijing to Taiwan and the free world.

Benedict Rogers is a writer and human rights activist specialising in Asia. He is the co-founder and Chief Executive of Hong Kong Watch, Senior Analyst for East Asia at CSW, an advisor to the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), the Stop Uyghur Genocide Campaign and several other charities, and Deputy Chair of the UK Conservative Party Human Rights Commission. A regular contributor to national and international media, including The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Telegraph, The Spectator, Foreign Policy, The Diplomat and The Tablet, as well as the BBC, GB News, CNBC and other networks, he is the author of six previous books, including Burma: A Nation at the Crossroads and Than Shwe: Unmasking Burma’s Tyrant, and his new book, The China Nexus: Thirty Years In and Around the Chinese Communist Party’s Tyranny, will be published this month. He first went to China in 1992 aged 18, to teach English for six months, and has travelled extensively throughout China many times. He lived in Hong Kong for the first five years after the handover, from 1997-2002, where he worked as a journalist. In 2017 he was denied entry to Hong Kong on the orders of Beijing, and in 2022, despite being based in London, he was threatened by the Hong Kong Police Force with imprisonment for violating Hong Kong’s National Security Law. He is a frequent speaker at conferences, universities and churches around the world, and has testified at hearings in the US Congress, the UK Parliament, the European Parliament and other legislatures. He was awarded the IRF Champion Award at the International Religious Freedom (IRF) Summit in Washington, DC in 2021 and the St Thomas More Award for Religious and Conscience Freedom Advocacy by the International Catholic Legislators Network in 2022.
